TLOS And Saklikent

TLOS SaklikentSpectacular in the spring with snow on the mountains that stand tall behind the theater, it’s an interesting Lycian city in Asia Minor, in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, because of the presence of the Ottoman fortress of “Bloody Ali” (Kanli Ali in Turkish), a local brigand in addition to the Lycian and Roman remains.

The 19th century archaeologist Charles Fellows who re-discovered Tlos in 1838, and several other nearby sites, had this to say about the approach to Tlos: “The whole ride down this upper valley is beautiful and varies continually; it’s scenery, on approaching the bold Greek like situation of the ancient city of Tlos, is strikingly picturesque”.

Nice to approach on foot if you feel up to it. A dolmus (local transportation by minibus) running along the little road that serves Xanthos and Saklikent can drop you at the bottom of the access road and the 4 kilometers (2,5 miles) hike gives you a feeling for the situation of the city. It’s the sort of site you can take in quickly or linger on for an afternoon.

Here you can see the tomb of Bellephoron. The carvings on the tomb represent Tlos’ main claim to archaeological significance. On the slope of the hill there are several Lycian sarcophagi and some other rock tombs. Another feature is Yedikapi, The seven doors or gates in Turkish. Following signs for the Hamam or Turkish baths you’ll come to a very dramatic set of seven arches overlooking the whole valley. Don’t miss the theater. Some charming carvings scattered about and the backdrop of the mountain range and the valley is hard to beat for spectacle. Other ruins in the city include a Roman stadium with a capacity of 2,500 people and a 150 meters-long agora (market) next to it.

We just returned from what can only be described as the most relaxing

9

We just returned from what can only be described as the most relaxing 8 days of our lives on the first ever TurkYacht charter gullet sailing holiday. Not only was it our first TurkYacht cruise but it was also our first travel adventure to Turkey and Greece as well. And what better way to relax than on a traditional Turkish sailing gullet, otherwise known as Karizma!For 8 days and 7 nights we cruised the beautiful and refreshing crystal clear waters in the Mediterranean Sea off the southern shores of Turkey and Greek islands with 14 other lucky passengers.

Some of TurkYacht’s sailing routes include bases of Marmaris, Gocek, and Fethiye. Unlike many island-based sailing in the Mediterranean, a holiday in this southern area of the Aegean primarily involves cruising the many bays, gulfs and inlets of mainland Turkey. Surrounding the coast are massive mountain ranges dropping sheer into azure seas, carving the shore into a procession of tiny coves, hidden bays, and pristine beaches. Hillsides forming a vista from your yacht are covered in pine and olives trees and the ruins of countless ancient cities; Greek, Roman, and Byzantine cram the coast, limiting development to a few isolated areas. The incredible combination of historical sites and wonders, beautiful sailing and superb swimming that make this coastline a truly fantastic destination.Turkey isn’t short of a nightspot either with the resorts of Marmaris, Fethiye and Gocek all standing out with their array of bars and nightclubs. Come here to drink, dance and be merry!

From Turkey we sailed west towards the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Kalimnos and Leros. Rhodes still has much to offer sailors with its splendid medieval capital city, also named Rhodes, and several smaller coastal villages that retain their authentic appeal . Kos is the starting port for sailing in the Northern Dodecanese. A touristy island, Kos highlights the benefits of a sailing holiday, where you can visit the bars, restaurants and churches and mosques of Kos town and then set out for the less populated islands of Kalymnos, Leros and Patmos. By day, if we were not sunning ourselves on the deck of the boats then we would be exploring the cultural offerings that Greece has in abundance. Whether it was the ruins of the towns or the old Castles and forts overlooking the small villages.

Luckily the evenings were just as good, if not better. Hours were spent sitting onboard the gullet with a beer or a wine in hand watching as the sky changed from royal blue into amazing reds, oranges and yellows as the sun set on each glorious day. Unfortunately like all good things it had to come to an end, and we finished our holiday back on mainland Turkey.

Astypalea Island

private yacht charter in turkey

Astypalea – one of the most beautiful islands of Greece !

Butterfly Aegean Sea , as they call this island locals call for its shape. Astypalea located between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese , and combines itself with the features of these two districts.From the air the island looks like a butterfly , the left of which is mountainous and almost treeless but  below the right side is covered by forest .Wonderful place for rock climbing and hiking through the narrow mountainous paths . Clean beaches , picturesque trees and neat buildings reminiscent of the Cyclades. Astypalea has a rich history , emphasizing the rugged beauty of the island.Nice news for hikers seeking to climb into the most secret corners : Astypalea – almost the only one of the Greek islands , where there are no snakes. The fact that this island is very rich about springs and streams, too mach storks often come to the island, so they deleted all snakes on the island.

In the city center there are old Venetian fortress . Inside the fortress are two churches Virginia Annunciation and St. George.Although Astypalea  not so mach a tourist spot in the town there are many bars with very different kind of music and institutions working until a morning. There are too many cozy taverns. From meat of hare and fish , seafood  till a  lobster , which can be ordered with the Italian style pasta Astipalea are famous. What about snacks there are delicious traditional cheeses and unusual taste butter with taste of cheese ” sinkafuro “.  Nice habit of the islanders and visitors after a big selibration to climb up to the fortress to meet sunshine all together!
